The live sound and music performance is like no other medium for expression and unpredictability, frequently yielding interesting sonic results, both on, and off stage. Sound checks, sound failures, the misassigned patch, unintended playing outcomes, FX overloads, calibrations and pinnacles of performative exploration can all create sources for eclectic new material.
In this 4th edition of Explorations in Sound, Furthernoise editor and curator Roger Mills, has assembled a voluminous compilation of artists works based on the serendipitous outcomes of live performance. This includes raw audio of tuning up, happy accidents, sound check experiments, improvisations, studio out takes, or any other means in which new source material was generated by performative chance. The fact that the compilation is so large and varied, represents the enormity of performative scenarios and experiences, that performers have when things don't quite go according to plan. Some of the results have already been recognised for their inherent originality and have become source material for new works by the artists, and it is this idea that is the inspiration for the curatorial theme. As John Cage wrote about his aleatory composition Imaginary Landscape No. 4 "A ›mistake‹ is beside the point, for once anything happens it authentically is." - John Cage (1951).
Contributions come from an international group of musicians and sound artists who are all well known creative practitioners in their fields, responding to the call “What is the sound of live performance?”
Thanks to all contributing artists, and continued support from Furtherfield.org, the Furthernoise team and Arts Council England.

February 2011
Both Zen and I like the people. So here are some photos of the people we met in Shanghai.
Parting was woesome always,We hugged and say goodbye in the subway station,my eyes moist.we had 7 gigs and had lot of fun in 8 days.We encountered a chaotic organization, our schedule has been disrupted,so Shanghai NO SCHEDULE.we encountered several days of rainy weather, plus this was the final stage of the Expo, more than 2 million tourists in Shanghai every day,and Shanghai itself has a combined population of more than twenty million,if you want to looking for a taxi is very difficult,Shanghai is a big wok, we are the cat on hot bricks,so Shanghai NO TAXI.We even can not buyed a train ticket to Hangzhou,so Shanghai NO TRAIN,traffic is a very serious problem in China now.
But this is an interesting experience for us, Shanghai is a crazy city, Shanghai Biennale is a crazy Biennale.we were pleased all people liked our live-act,ISAAC was surprised that we can have such live performances,he really is a very nice man!hope we have more opportunity to cooperate in the future.
Greg, you should study Kung Fu and play with Gao Shiming next time!
I went back to the young city of Shenzhen to continue the quiet life. I continue ChoP project and hope to have more Polish artists come to China in 2011,you will have crazy experience in crazy China!
Our last day on tour was amazing. We got up at about 8 o'clock because we had to go to Shangai again. The sun was shining so one more time we could admire Zhujiajiao. We ate some nice Chinese food which you can see in the photos. It was freshly prepared and very tasty. Younger and his wife left their child with the grandfathers and both them, their mothers and the three of us went to Shanghai. The trip in the old car was sometimes quite funny but to tell you the truth it was also a bit dangerous. No seat belts, the chairs were not fastened to the floor... scary!
You can see the contrast between the village and a city. Our last moments together in Shanghai were short. We were talking about some funny things we did and saw, and of course about Gao Shimin... let's .................. :-)
Than alone I went to the green line metro and went to the Pudong airport. I was lucky to get into Maglev again. This time it reached it's top speed of 431 km/h. 30 km in 7 minutes. You can watch the whole journey. I've just read that the Chinese government wants to connect Hangzhou (the lake city) with Shanghai using 200 km long Maglev. The funny taxi journey which took us about 2,5 hours, than the train journey of 1,5 hour will change into only 30 minutes with the top speed of 450 km/h. That is amazing!
You can see the Pudong airport and the same people :-) I had a short chat with that nice old man and his wife. They remembered me quite well. I showed them the photos I took. (I met them once more in Amsterdam).
The last airplane was the Embraer. I was in Warsaw about 23:00. Of course they lost my luggage in Amsterdam. Fortunately I got it yesterday.
It really wasn't planned. As we used to say during our visit in Shanghai: "Shanghai no schedule", once more this appeared to be the whole truth. Our friend B6 said that Zhujiajiao was a great place. He knows some people there, so we decided to go. Of course there was a possibility to play a small gig for the local audience, so there was a good motivation for us.
The gig was not big and not loud. But still, very nice and friendly atmosphere influenced everything we played. I really liked the people sitting around the fire, drinking green tea and listening to our music. It was the last gig during our visit in Shanghai but I will remember it forever.
After the gig we went with a few friends to eat my last real Chinese meal. It was delicious and the Kung Fu Fighting at the table was the best. I started the discussion about the Kung Fu and than all the Zhujiajiao friends decided to start the Tai Chi lessons. I think it's really great!
zen lu:
Zhu Jiajiao is is a clean place, the old town surrounded by rivers, quiet street, the simple folk.in ancient times, here was a very important commercial town,at that time, no cars and trains, all materials have to rely on water transport, here was the second largest barn.Today, many local residents to move to big cities, leaving only the elderly. Many people began to dream of country life, so here become a gathering place for tourists.Anyway, this is the most beautiful places we have seen in China.
Younger is my friend,he worked at a museum in Shanghai 3 years ago,Soon he was disgusted city life,so he moved to Zhu Jiajiao old town, and founded a hostel called Cao Tang.Younger told us the gig started at 9pm,we decided play ambient, becasue an old woman lived at next door, she slept very early.few audiences, small sound. For us, this was a treat, we were completely relaxed.we did not do any communication, this gig was 17th improvisation of ChoP vol.1,We knew what kind of sound each other.
This is China :-)
No i samo miejsce.
That was our best decision. Instead of going to Hangzhou we should have gone to Zhujiajiao the day before. But fortunately we finally reached our final destination. In my humble opinion it is the best place I saw in China. And I've seen many, many places so far. Narrow streets, arched bridges and many small shops with amazing goods create an atmosphere which is really hard to forget. I would really like to come back here in the future.
Właśnie siedzimy z Zenem i znowu złapała nas śmiechawa!
No to wyszliśmy ze stacji, złapać taxi do Hangzhou. (nie wiedziałem, ale to ok. 150 km).
Zaraz zjawił się taksiarz. Zaczęliśmy negocjacje od 800 RMB. Skończyło się na 400. Zapakowaliśmy się do taxy i jedziemy zadowoleni. Autostrada piękna, szybka jazda, aż dojechaliśmy do bramki poboru opłat. No i co? No i luzik. Kierowca miał już plan. Koleś wyszedł na trasę i zaczął łapać dla nas stopa! Samochody zapierniczają wokół niego, a on twardo latał po całej autostradzie i machał ręką. To trzeba przeżyć!
(i pewnie dalej).
Shanghai no schedule, no taxi, no way, no train - we just NOISE SHANGHAI.
I'm very tired 22 -23 October, becasue we had 6 concert in 2 days, it's crazy. The 6th concert was NOISHANGHAI, we played at 696 LIVE HOUSE. Fucking weather, big rain these days. We played 3 times at Shanghai Art Museum on 22 October. Isaac really liked our performace. GREG asked the artist fee and per diems some times, the lady told us that we only have per diems, and took us to the office, but they could not find out our name on the list......
Big rain in Shanghai. We could not get a taxi, so Shanghai no taxi. Our performance started at 9pm, Torturing Nurse played first, they have a new member. She is a nice girl. They played harsh noise. The nice girl screamed. I can not imagine her body so thin but has great power. I and Greg played solo, then we played toghter as ChoP. Just 6 people came but we had a good show. it's 16th concert of ChoP vol.1.
